Continuum of Care for Adults

Princeton House Behavioral Health offers a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services for adults seeking relief from mental illness, emotional difficulties or addiction. Inpatient programs are offered only at our hospital unit or main campus in Princeton. Outpatient programs that serve as a "step down" from inpatient hospitalization or as the entry point of treatment are available in Princeton, North Brunswick, Cherry Hill and Hamilton.

Psychiatric Programs

ph adultsPrinceton House Behavioral Health offers highly individualized treatment that is tailored to each patient's needs and is designed to help patients get their lives back in balance. Care is provided by a skilled team of board certified physicians, nurses, social workers and allied mental health professionals.

Dual Diagnosis Program

Princeton House Behavioral Health offers a unique approach for the special needs of those with dual diagnosis. If you are suffering with both psychiatric illness and chemical dependency, our multidisciplinary program and intensive daily schedule support you at each step toward recovery.

Medical Detoxification

Princeton House Behavioral Health provides close medical supervision and medication monitoring during the detoxification process. The comfort and safety of our patients is our priority. Our short-term program involves counseling, education and family support in order to ensure physical and emotional stability.

Addiction Recovery

Establishing a support system that promotes ongoing recovery and stability is a critical part of recovery. At Princeton House Behavioral Health, we help you learn how to build and rely on such a system and to develop a variety of coping skills to prevent relapse.

Short Term Care Facility

The Short Term Care Facility is located within Princeton House Behavioral Health and is part of a state-of-the-art, 25,000 square foot addition to our existing inpatient facility. It is a 21-bed adult acute care psychiatric unit, designated by The State of New Jersey Division of Mental Health Services, hospitalizing both involuntary and consensual patients. All patients are referred by a designated Screening Center and must be residents of Middlesex, Somerset or Hunterdon counties.

The goal of the Short Term Care Facility is to provide intensive treatment to patients meeting the commitment standard for mental illness. Every effort is made to stabilize the patient quickly and to transfer him or her to a less restrictive level of care as soon as possible. Treatment is provided with a multidisciplinary approach that includes the participation of community mental health representatives.

Partial Hospital Programs: Princeton, North Brunswick, Cherry Hill & Hamilton

    When inpatient care is not needed, but intensive therapeutic support is, we offer many innovative programs. These partial hospital programs typically run between five and six hours daily. Our outpatient services parallel our inpatient programs, ensuring smooth transitions from one level of care to the next, as well as ongoing support.

    Psychiatric Program

    Individuals who are seeking help for a variety of acute emotional and behavioral problems, or require treatment following an inpatient hospitalization, find the support necessary to regain stability and return to more functional roles.

    Addiction Recovery Program

    At PHBH, we provide treatment and counseling for a wide range of addictions.  Establishing a support system that promotes ongoing recovery and stability is a critical part of recovery.  We help patients learn how to build and utilize support in their daily lives and to develop a variety of coping skills preventing relapse

    Dual Diagnosis Program

    Frequently, people may experience emotional or behavioral difficulties and struggle with addiction issues at the same time. This program helps individuals to regain emotional stability and begin the work necessary to enter into recovery from substance abuse.

    The Gateway Program (Princeton & North Brunswick )

    We offer those experiencing more severe and persistent emotional disorders the opportunity to gain psychiatric stability in this specialized day treatment program. Group therapies are specifically tailored to meet the needs of those with schizophrenia and similar illnesses. Sessions are consistently interactive and appropriately challenging.

    The MICA Program (Princeton & North Brunswick )

    Individuals with severe and persistent mental illness and co-existing addiction disorders often cycle between short-term psychiatric hospitalizations and periods of marginal functioning in the community. The MICA Program is designed to break this cycle by providing longer-term treatment in a partial hospital setting.

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

    Princeton, North Brunswick, Cherry Hill & Hamilton

    Features of all Princeton House Behavioral Health IOP Programs:

    • Comprehensive evaluation and individual treatment plan
    • Master's level therapists
    • Certified addictions counselors
    • Addiction programs with a 12-step focus
    • Focus on relapse prevention

    These specially designed psychiatric, addiction and dual diagnosis programs are able to meet the needs of individuals at varying stages of recovery. A combination of individual, group therapy and medication management, as needed, is provided on a three hours a day, three times a week basis. Intensive Outpatient Programs can be an effective alternative to, or a "step-down" from, our inpatient or partial hospital levels of care.

    Adult Psychiatric IOP

    This program is offered during daytime hours at the following locations: Princeton, North Brunswick and Cherry Hill.

    Dual Diagnosis IOP

    This program is offered during daytime hours at the following locations: Princeton, North Brunswick, Hamilton and Cherry Hill. The program is also available in the evening at the Princeton location only.

    Addiction Recovery IOP

    The addiction recovery program is offered in the evening at the Princeton, North Brunswick, Hamilton and Cherry Hill locations.

Electroconvulsive Therapy

    Electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, is a safe and effective treatment for depression and other affective disorders that have not been responsive to antidepressants or other pharmacological approaches. It is also used in acute situations where immediate relief of depressive symptoms is essential. The treatment is performed by the evaluating psychiatrist, and anesthesia is administered by a board certified anesthesiologist. Nurses certified in advanced cardiac life support are present throughout the treatment, including the recovery period. This is an outpatient procedure performed at 1000 Herrontown Road, located conveniently across the street from the Main Campus of Princeton House Behavioral Health in Princeton.
